Outline for Essay #2:  Group Advocacy

  1. Introduction
    1. Interesting statistic, fact, or story to catch the audience’s attention.
    2. Connection between statistic, fact, or story and the organization to bridge the gap between the issue and the specific organization working on the issue.
    3. Pertinent organization background. Examples might be the history of the organization, celebrity/well-known members or endorsements, current leadership, etc.
    4. Thesis with warrants. It will look like some version of this:  ______________ deserves our support because……(warrants are reasons—see Toulmin notes).  You should have at least two warrants, but you can have as many as you like.  Warrant examples might be the organization’s record of successful projects, future goals, or responsible use of donation money.
  2. Body
    1. Warrant #1
      1. Explanation of warrant (from thesis)
      2. Backing (proof that warrant is true); list author, source, and page number
  • Commentary/Connection to the thesis
